Carmeyia Gillis is the Director of the Division of Information and Education for the Office of Minority Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. As the Director of the Division, she leads activities that increase public awareness of the Office of Minority Health's strategic priorities and initiatives to eliminate health disparities and advance health equity by coordinating communications activities with all internal and external partners, stakeholders and the public. In addition, she leads the coordination of outreach activities and campaigns, traditional and social media engagement, and the work of the Office of Minority Health Resource Center.
Carmeyia brings more than two decades of experience in the public and private sectors. Most recently, she was the Communications Director with the Department of Labor’s (DOL) Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs. OFCCP protects workers, promotes diversity and enforces the law. Ms. Gillis was responsible for directing the agency’s internal and external communications efforts as well as national outreach activities.
Prior to her work with DOL, Ms. Gillis was the Ready Campaign Manager and a Strategic Communications Adviser at the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). She also served as a team lead on FEMA’s Diversity Management Advisory Council and represented the agency through Emergency Support Function-15, External Affairs, during declared domestic disasters and emergencies. Previously, she served as the front-line Press Officer for national weather and climate forecasts at the National Weather Service’s National Centers for Environmental Prediction. Ms. Gillis began her career in corporate communications in the private sector.
Ms. Gillis received her Bachelor of Arts in TV & Film Programming and Production at the University of Wisconsin, Master of Arts in Public Communication from American University, and Master of Professional Studies: Corporate Communications from Georgetown University.
